Fred Powledge's articles have appeared in dozens of publications, including The New Yorker, Life, Audubon, BioScience, and others. They cover a wide range of interests, beginning with civil rights and broadening more recently into issues of the environment and agriculture and, most important, Earth's biological diversity.

In addition, he has served as a consultant, producing reports and other documents, for numerous organizations in diverse regions of the world. These include the Center for International Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Colombia, International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima, International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP) in Montpelier, France, International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in Sri Lanka, and International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) in Rome. His work-related travel has taken him to Latin America, Africa, the Republic of China, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, India, and throughout the United States.


He contributed articles on agriculture and environment to several editions of World Resources, the biennial reference published by the World Resources Institute.


Powledge did the travel and research for, wrote, and illustrated Rescuing Earth's Diversity, which chronicles the work done by winners of the US$180,000 Biodiversity Leadership Awards given by the Bay and Paul Foundations. He visited the winners at work in the field around the world, then wrote and designed the report and guided it through the printing process. 


Powledge has contributed to the online services provided by BioMedNet. He organized an international debate on genetically modified foods for BioMedNet's Web-based journal, H.M.S. Beagle, and wrote the content for it. Powledge also has written daily news offerings for BioMedNet.


He has edited reports on such subjects as electronic journalism, prostate cancer, and the economic, social, and biological future of the potato. He collaborated in the research for, and writing and editing of, a NatureServe report on environmental protection at U.S. military bases, Sustaining the Mission.
